This month, HelloWestTravel.com caught up with Paula Rizos, commercial director, Western Canada, Transat Holidays/Nolitours, to get a look into her life. Born and raised on Vancouver’s North Shore, Rizos is the oldest of four siblings, and described her younger self as: “tough as nails. I was a big tomboy; first one out to play, last one to come in and always took responsibility for my brothers and sisters...and I still do.” Before she knew the travel industry was her calling, Rizos wanted to be a high school P.E. teacher. “I was quite athletic, quite the jock...and I knew that I always wanted to do something with people,” she said. Rizos has been in the industry since she was 20 years old, but previous to that, she worked at Vancouver’s Pacific National Exhibition (the PNE) modelling spas for her uncle. [Full text and pictures]

WestJet to launch new regularly scheduled service from Toronto to The Cayman Islands; Minich hopes this will grow the western market
The recent announcement by WestJet that it will begin regularly-scheduled service to Grand Cayman from Toronto this November, was welcome news for the destination, who has had a partnership with the airline in its sights for several years. The new strategic alliance is part of an overall marketing strategy by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (CIDOT) to grow its market share from Canada, and in particular the western provinces. “A quarter of our Canadian visitors come from Western Canada and this new partnership with WestJet represents a real opportunity for us to grow that number even further,” says Minich. WestJet’s Toronto-Grand Cayman service will begin November 4, 2010 with the carrier flying three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. [Full text and pictures]
