Canadian ski operators could be in for a tough season this winter as travellers rethink their vacation plans amid growing economic problems in this country and around the world. Financing and credit troubles have already plagued several resorts, while others are hoping loyal skiers and snowboarders looking to stay close to home will help make up for any drop in visitors from further afield. Not disastrous, but it will get worse Gabor Forgacs, a professor in Ryerson University's tourism program, says it probably won't be a disastrous year, but it will undoubtedly be worse. NEW LIFTS IN CANADA

For the upcoming Canadian ski season the following resorts have announced these new lift/run highlights: Whistler-Blackcomb, B.C.: Peak-to-peak gondola opens Dec. 12, carrying skiers and snowboarders 4.4 kilometres between the two mountains in 11 minutes; Grouse Mountain, B.C.: Two new quad chairlifts; Cypress Mountain, B.C.: A gladed run called the Shore Glades passes through forests and opens up with panoramic views of Vancouver; Revelstoke Mountain Resort, B.C.: The hotel and high-speed quad will open at end of December, later than first scheduled.
