| Deanna Isbister and Brittni Paiva | | Representatives from the Big Island of Hawaii completed their Canadian tour with dates in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver last week. At the end of the show Deanna Isbister, Sales Manager for the Big Island Visitors Bureau had a chance to talk to TRAVELHotNews Western Edition. “Canada is an important market for us with a high repeat factor,” she said after the Vancouver show. “Year after year almost 60 per cent of our Canadian visitors are repeat visitors.” The Big Island has had strong numbers in 2008 compared to 2007, Isbister noted. “Our year-to-date numbers for the Canadian market are up 22 per cent and the romance market is very good. The number of Canadians getting married on the Big Island is up 46 per cent over last year and the number of honeymooners is up 11 per cent.” Continue reading to find out which four travel agents from across Canada will have a chance to discover the island’s charms.

Scotland celebrates Rabbie Burns with huge homecoming
Next year, Scotland is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Rabbie Burns with Homecoming Scotland 2009, a celebration of Scotland’s rich culture and history. From Burns Night (Jan. 25) to St Andrew’s Day (Nov. 30) 2009 a country-wide program of homecoming events and activities has been designed to celebrate some of Scotland’s great contributions to the world: Burns himself, whisky, golf, great Scottish minds and innovations and Scotland’s culture and heritage which lives on at home and through Scotland’s global family. In a conversation with TRAVELHotNews West, Susan Russell, international PR executive for Visit Scotland, said now is a particularly good time for Canadian travel agents to book their clients to Scotland, mentioning the Scottish specialist program offered by the tourist board.

Windstar Cruises launches “Half the Deposit, All the Luxury” program on new bookings made Oct. 22 through Dec. 15
Windstar Cruises is reducing its cruise deposit requirement by 50 per cent on all new bookings made October 22 through December 15, 2008, for any 2009 sailing that is not within final payment requirement. The new program allows guests between October 22 and December 15, 2008, to make a deposit of $375 per person, instead of $750 per person, within three days of booking a Windstar cruise to secure a reservation for 2009 sailings that are outside of the final payment period. The remaining deposit is due January 15, 2009. “In these challenging economic times, we are offering guests more value by significantly reducing the amount of deposit required on luxurious Windstar cruise vacations,” said Diane Moore, President of Windstar Cruises.

Contac donates portion of greeting card sales to Heart and Stroke Foundation from Oct. 1, 2008 to Sept. 30, 2009
Contac has announced that they will be participating in a one-year program where they will donate 7.5 per cent of all greeting card sales to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009. Donations will benefit heart disease and stroke research, education and advocacy. “Contac is pleased to contribute a portion of our annual greeting cards sales to such a worthy cause,” said Riaz Pisani, Contac’s chief executive officer. “Several of our employees and their families have been affected by heart disease and stroke so we thought supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation was a good fit for our company. This fundraising initiative is also an opportunity for us to raise more awareness about heart disease and stroke to our customers and encourage our staff to eat healthy and exercise."
