Japan Airlines celebrates 40 years of service to Vancouver

A lot of things have changed in 40 years, but not the level of service on Japan Airlines. And that was the message on September 10 when JAL staff and industry insiders gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the airline’s service to Vancouver at the Marine Drive Golf Club. Glen Brooks, general manager passenger sales and marketing, Canada for JAL took the podium and led the crowd through a light-hearted rundown of just what was happening in 1968 when JAL began its Vancouver to Tokyo service. SUNSATIONAL SOUTH PACIFIC
Agents warm to southern destinations at "Sunsational" South Pacific roadshow

The Sunsational South Pacific roadshow was a hit with agents in Alberta and B.C. who are seeking alternative sun destinations for their clients. Jointly hosted by the tourist boards of the Cook Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Samoa, the number of travel agents who registered (weeks in advance) and then turned up for the event exceeded expectations, said Rick Buecking, the organizer of the road show and the Canadian representative for the Cook Islands. Starting out in Edmonton (52 agents were in attendance), Calgary (53), Kelowna (35) and Vancouver (80), the shows were held from September 8 to 11 and lasted from five to six hours. CATHAY APPOINTS SHUM AS NEW VP CANADA
Cathay Pacific announces Alex Shum as new Vice President Canada
Alex Shum
Cathay Pacific Airways has appointed, Alex Shum, to the position of vice president Canada where he will be responsible for the airline’s operations in Canada. He relocates to Vancouver from the headquarters in Hong Kong. Shum brings a broad range of experience to his new role as vice president Canada.  He joined the airline in 1988 as assistant communications engineer and was soon promoted to communications engineer. In addition, Shum has held managerial positions in information management, marketing, revenue, business improvement, airline and cargo planning. He also worked in Bangkok, Thailand and in Manila as country manager Philippines & Guam.  In 1997, Shum completed a Masters in business management from the University of Michigan. WESTERN CANADA FLIES TO JAMAICA
The Jamaica Tourist Board announces more non-stop Western departures
The Jamaica Tourist Board has announced more non-stop flights departing from Western Canada this winter season. The destination will also have weekly arrivals from Vancouver for the first time. Air service from Vancouver will be provided by Air Transat, Thomas Cook/Sunquest and Air Canada Vacations. Keep reading for a complete update on this fall and winter season for Western Canada. SUNWING GOES TO MAZATLAN
Sunwing adds Mazatlan, Mexico from Regina
Sunwing Vacations has announced its newest route from Regina to Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The program will be offered with flights every Thursday from December 18 to March 26. A selection of packages which start at $925 per person, double occupancy, plus taxes are available. Hotels or properties with inclusive plans, which feature all meals, drinks, and some activities, include The El Cid Granada and agents should note that the Hotel Playa Mazatlan is a Sunwing Club Hotel, meaning that Sunwing clients automatically receive benefits such as advance reservations at the a la carte restaurant at no extra cost. All flights are on board Sunwing Airlines. Elite Plus tickets can be purchased for $40 more per flight, and provide advance seat selection, extra-legroom seats, 30 kg baggage allowance and priority boarding. [Full text and pictures]


ACTA WELCOMES GANNON BACK
ACTA has announced that Colleen Gannon, Alberta’s Regional Manager is back from maternity leave. She has officially returned to the office as of Monday, September 8.
