WestJet unveiled the new Bombardier Q400 aircraft selected for the company’s new regional carrier in Calgary last week.
At the beginning of the year, WestJet announced it was considering launching a regional airline and in February, revealed that 91 per cent of company employees who voted in a company poll supported the move. In April, WestJet selected the Canadian-made Bombardier Q400 aircraft for the new airline.
In an earlier statement, Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO said a short-haul aircraft combined with WestJet's brand, balance sheet strength and low-cost structure will allow WestJet to profitably introduce WestJet's service to many smaller communities who have asked for service; optimize the size of aircraft to efficiently increase frequency; create new connections between existing WestJet markets; and build additional feed to the current 71-city network in order to continue to profitably grow and add shareholder value.
The new aircraft is expected to launch in the second half of 2013.
