A team of eight member communities known as the Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) is now offering salmon fishing excursions on Osoyoos Lake.
To celebrate the return of the salmon after stocks have successfully rebounded, the ONA will be offering unique salmon fishing experiences on Osoyoos Lake, and the Watermark Beach Resort will be offering a special Watermark Fishing Excursion Package.
The package is available from July 27 through Aug. 31 with rates starting from $409 based on double occupancy, and includes one night of accommodation and a four hour fishing tour for two people.
The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre, in partnership with the Okanagan Nation Alliance Fisheries Department, will be hosting these sports fishing tours with a difference departing right outside the doors of the Watermark. Guests will discover local First Nation’s knowledge of the sockeye salmon and hear Chaptik stories of the lands and its people as they embark on a fishing trip out onto Osoyoos Lake. Guided by both a sports fisherman and a representative from the ONA, fisherman will experience the thrill of witnessing the largest sockeye return in decades while learning about the traditions and culture behind the salmon.
Each guest will be given the opportunity to take home two prize salmon to legally catch and keep. Following that, anything else caught is given to ONA to sell. Proceeds from the sales ensures a sustainable partnership ensuring that funds are available for the much needed work keeping this fishery alive. A daily market throughout the summer will be held at the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre where along with the fish, fresh and organic produce will be available.
